DREAM STATES, 2015
Michael Garlington and Jennifer Georgescu 

Garlington incorporates sculptural elements, portraiture, and fantasy in unique photographs, often working with his partner Natalia Bertotti. He arranges subjects to elicit raw emotion using 4-by-5 film and rough processing. Prints are provocative, heavily textured, and unexplainable. Some images employ heavy framing composed of crockery or repetitive cut-out constructions. His imagery derives from history and art history. He has built featured art projects at Burning Man.

Georgescu presents a tale that explores fate, free will, and identity. Combining found imagery with self-portraits in each print, Star Gazers reveals humanity’s longing to be remembered and appreciated even though we are insignificant in comparison to the universe. Somewhere between fantasy and film noir, these dark, understated images haunt me still. 

JOURNEYS, 2015
Kate Jordahl, Irene Imfeld, Jack Fulton

Three artists depict three journeys—symbolic, existential, and literal. Inspired by Kandinsky’s writing, Jordahl set off on a European pilgrimage to discover the spirit of art and made fine monochrome prints to reflect on her journey. Imfeld looked for meaning in windows without views, doors to nowhere, and ruined buildings to express impenetrable doubt with the full series Web of Uncertainty. Fulton explored curious sights in three hours close to his home, resulting in wildly colorful and quirky glimpses of his day’s wanderings.

OAKLAND AND BEYOND: SENSE OF PLACE, 2014
Diallo Mwathi Jeffery, Lee Nelson, Linda Fitch, Charles Anselmo, Thomas Grubba

The locales chosen by these photographers evoke a strong, unmistakable sense of place: Jeffery presented panoramic images of Oakland, taken from the hills above. Nelson surveyed Los Angeles to find offbeat vistas of the Hollywood sign. Fitch showed atmospheric landscapes from Scotland’s remote coast, many at night. Anselmo depicted old Havana’s collapsing buildings with colorful structures that resemble paintings. Grubba’s study of York Minster rendered architecture through pristine perspectives of a grand Gothic space.

INTO THE WINTER NIGHT, 2014
Three bodies of work combined into a moody black-and-white show.

Hyeyoung Kim and Arlo Valera: Inside the Outsider. Observations of daily life explore persistent emotions and obsessions through characters and scenes staged using handmade constructions. Unique artworks coated with wax presented in artist-made framing.

David McClendon: Into the Mirror. We all pay attention to nuances of the human face but seldom can we examine such extreme detail. Large prints created with a room-size camera and 14-by-17-inch x-ray film. Unforgiving portraits of ordinary faces.

Erin Malone: Amico d’Infanzia. Childhood friends, childhood memories, childhood lost. Nostalgic, and sometimes frightening, toys take on a life of their own. Made with the concentrated focus of a 4-by-5 lensless camera.

PORTRAITS FROM OAKLAND, 2012
This project of the Bay Area Photographers Collective was shot by John Martin, Ralf Hillebrand, Charlotte Niel, Anthony Delgado, Henry Bowles, and Gary Weiner 

Throughout a tumultuous year, photographers from the Bay Area Photographers Collective attended the Oakland Art Murmur on First Fridays and made portraits of visitors. Portraits From Oakland was conceived as a collective endeavor with sharing of images and credit going to BAPC. I printed a dozen larger-than-life prints myself and intermingled them with many small prints hung like laundry. On opening night people rushed to find their own portraits.

BODY AWARENESS, 2012

The iconic theme of the body, with its timeless desires and doubts, is explored through contemporary prints by eleven artists—from sex dolls and strippers to innocent children and religious iconography. The challenge of working with the nude is to express the intuited and emotional component of experience with a subject that universally compels the attention of the senses.

FROM JAPAN TO JAPAN, Images of Japan by American Photographers, 2011
Judy Dater, LeRoy Howard, Allan Mandell, Anthony Delgado, Ari Salomon, Whitney Vosburgh, John Watson 

Inspired by Japanese culture after the Fukushima tsunami disaster, I found elegant and funky views of the customs and land from familiar photographers. Soft, floral beauty, woven urban views, traditional customs, twisted architectural manipulations, costumed self-portraiture—all capturing aspects of an urban society blended with a refined history. A benefit for Fortunate Blessings Foundation for their work with Japanese children who survived the earthquake and tsunami.
